What is a HF tube mill?
A HF welded Tube Mill is a type of industrial tube or pipe mill that uses high-frequency (HF) welding technology to manufacture metal tubes and pipes from a flat strip or coil of metal. It’s one of the most common methods for producing longitudinally welded tubes used in construction, automotive, machinery, and structural applications.
Key Concept — High-Frequency Welding (HFW)
In an HF welded tube mill, the edges of a formed metal strip are joined together using high-frequency electrical current (typically in the tens to hundreds of kilohertz range). This induced current rapidly heats only the edges of the strip through skin and proximity effects, bringing them to a temperature where they can be welded without filler materials. Once hot, the edges are pressed together under controlled pressure to form a continuous weld seam.
How It Works
The process happens in a continuous production line with several coordinated stages:
Blue Sky Tube Mill
Uncoiling & Strip Feeding: A coil of metal strip (such as steel, stainless steel, or other alloys) is unwound and straightened.
Forming: Roll stands gradually bend the strip into a tubular shape.
HF Welding: As the formed tube enters the welding section, a high-frequency current heats the edges. Pressure rollers then forge the heated edges together, creating a high-integrity longitudinal weld.
Sizing & Cooling: After welding, the tube passes through sizing rolls and cooling systems to achieve precise dimensions and metallurgical properties.
Cutting: Finally, a flying saw or similar cutting device cuts the tube to the required length without stopping the line.
Why Hf Tube Mills Are Important
High Production Speed: HF welded mills can run continuously at high speeds, making them ideal for large-volume production.
Consistent Weld Quality: The high-frequency weld seam is narrow and strong, with good mechanical properties and minimal heat-affected zone.
Versatility: These mills can produce round, square, and rectangular tubes for structural, mechanical, and industrial uses.
Applications
HF welded tubes are widely used in:
- Construction and infrastructure projects
- Automotive components
- Furniture and mechanical tubing
- Oil, gas, and fluid conveyance systems
- Structural frames and supports
A HF welded tube mill combines continuous roll forming with high-frequency induction welding to efficiently produce welded metal tubes with excellent quality and precision — a core technology for modern tube and pipe manufacturing.
